Da Cranes...Da Cranes

Although Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge continues to have very few birds this year, there is good news for photographers.

Ladd Gordon Waterfowl Complex just up the road is hosting large numbers of sandhill cranes and many snow geese. Management added a pond in 2023 near the entrance of the complex which makes it easy to photograph the birds in and around water. The resident deer and hawks stay near by, too.

The complex is off I-25 at exit 175 (between Socorro and Belen).

A Special Night

It was my honor to teach the first-ever night photography workshop for the National Park Service at Valles Caldera National Preserve last Saturday. Despite the sub-freezing temperatures it was a great event. We are already discussing new workshops for 2024.

4th Time is a Charm

The judge selected my image Morning Flight first place in the contest “Starts with the Letter B.” I am at a loss for words other than thank you.

Kozlowski's Trading Post on the Santa Fe Trail

On May 20, I will be leading a night sky photography workshop for the National Park Service at Pecos National Historical Park. This time will be at the newly-opened Kozlowski’s Trading Post Museum at the entrance to Forked Lightning Ranch. If you are interested, please contact me.

This One is Special

This win was special because I am getting back to my black & white roots from high school. First place in Landscapes in Black and White with my image “Mono Wave”.

Thanks to All!

I just learned I won the People’s Choice Award at “The Art of Healing” show in Albuquerque. Thanks to all who voted for me. A very nice honor.

After a year of house arrest....

I have been quite busy this year despite some places being closed. Photo safaris have included my first visits to Big Bend National Park, Valley of the Gods (Utah) and Whitewater Draw in Arizona. I also managed to check off a couple of things from my bucket list: 1. photograph big horn sheep in the wild and 2. capture the Milky Way over The Mittens in Monument Valley.

Additionally, I did my first-ever studio shoot with a model and even ventured out of my comfort zone and did some senior/graduation photos for a friends daughter.

Last week I taught a night sky workshop at Pecos National Historical Park and may be doing workshops at another National Park Service unit later this year.

Finally, I have been pleasantly surprised to have won five photo contests this year with my image “Light from Above” earning its sixth win.

Until next time….

WOW!

Tonight the Dona Ana Photography Club announced its awards (via Zoom) for 2020.

As a new member, it was my first time participating. Two of my photos received awards including my photo “The Shadow” winning Best in Class.

The last award given is for Photo-of-the-Year. I was quite surprised to see the winner.

My thanks to the club and the judges. I am honored.

A GREAT HONOR

Pecos National Historical Park has opened an exhibition of my work that includes images from my time as the first-ever Artist-in-Residence for the park.  The title of the exhibit is:  "A Glimpse of Pecos Through the Lens of Stan Ford."  Tentative plans call for the exhibit to continue until the summer of 2019.  If you have a chance, please stop by the park's museum (inside the visitor's center) and check it out.
